OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, proudly revealed at the inaugural developer conference in San Francisco that ChatGPT has now amassed an impressive “about a hundred million” weekly active users. Notably, over two million developers are currently leveraging its API, with a remarkable 92% of Fortune 500 companies actively incorporating ChatGPT into their workflows.
The growth trajectory of ChatGPT has been remarkable, making it the fastest-growing consumer app until recently. Achieving the milestone of 100 million monthly users within just two months of its release, ChatGPT demonstrated its widespread appeal. However, in July, Instagram’s Threads set a new record by reaching the same milestone in a mere five days following its launch. Despite this, Threads’ growth has since plateaued, and as of October, it hovers just below the 100 million monthly active users mark.
Exciting developments were unveiled at the developer conference, including a platform that empowers users to craft personalized versions of ChatGPT tailored to specific use cases. OpenAI also introduced the GPT-4 Turbo, offering developers a cost-effective solution with enhanced task capabilities, being three times more economical. Boasting access to information up to April 2023 and an impressive 128K context window—equivalent to over 300 pages of text in a single prompt—GPT-4 Turbo is set to elevate the user experience.
The impact of OpenAI’s GPT-4 extends beyond its own ecosystem, as evidenced by Microsoft’s Bing search engine, now powered by this advanced language model. March saw Bing surpass 100 million daily active users, marking a significant milestone over a decade after its initial launch. Additionally, ChatGPT premium users gained a valuable tool in September with the introduction of the “Browse with Bing” feature, allowing access to real-time information seamlessly.
