In a recent development, Instagram is currently in the testing phase for a groundbreaking feature that allows users to disable read receipts in their direct message (DM) conversations. The revelation was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram Head Adam Mosseri during their Instagram Broadcast channels session on Tuesday.
Zuckerberg enthusiastically shared the news, stating, “For those who prefer not to respond immediately, your time has arrived.” He went on to announce, “We’re currently experimenting with the option to deactivate read receipts on Instagram DMs.” Mosseri provided additional insights on his broadcast channel, explaining that users will soon have the flexibility to control when others can see if their messages have been read.
To illustrate the functionality, Mosseri unveiled a preview of the new feature—a “Read receipts” toggle located within the “Privacy & Safety” settings on Instagram.
Although details regarding the widespread release and global availability of this feature remain undisclosed, Mosseri’s assurance that “You asked, we listened” indicates that the demand for this capability is substantial. Users can anticipate a broad rollout in the near future.
